Encontre este raro video, la banda inglesa Echo & the Bunnymen en una presentaciòn ante la televisiòn japonesa, creo que ellos son los màs sorprendidos por todo lo que sucede a su alrededor, por el idioma, por la atmosfera, por las preguntas que no llegan cabalmente a entender…

Echo and the bunnymen: Siberia podría cerrar el círculo
Después del Flowers del 2001, parecía que no habia mucha que los Echo and the Bunnymen pudieran hacer, el disco no funcionó y nos dejó la sensación que ya no tenían nada más que decir. Luego vinieron las recopilaciones (esas que hacen las disqueras para exprimir hasta el final a los fans) los discos solitarios de Ian, y de pronto en el 2005 este disco, Siberia.
Decidieron no inventar nada nuevo, olvidaron sus animos modernizantes, despojaron a su música de cualqiuer signo de experimentación, y simplemente se trasladaron a los ochenta; 11 canciones de una época distinta, que facilmente pudieron ser publicadas en 1982.
La canción que más disfruto es Stormy Weather, en especial por la nostalgia por los tiempos perdidos que resuma, aunque estemos un poco más de mitad de década y sea otro siglo, aún podemos seguir soñando con el tiempo perdido.

The kiling moon es ya un himno de los ochenta, y orginalmente parte del album Ocean rain lanzado en 1984, sin embargo con los años se ha convertido en un single autónomo y que le ha válido además a los Echo conseguir conectar con la sensibilidad de una nueva generación.

La canción ha sido además parte de dos bandas sonoras, en el 2001, fue escogida para la película Donnie Darko, una extraña película sobre un adolescente deprimido y atormentado por un conejo maquiavélico y luego en el 2004, incluida como soporte musical en la película Girl Next door, una comedia sobre el mundo de las pornstars, protagonizada por Elisha Cuthbert (Kim bauer en 24). Les dejó la letra y el video de una presentación en la televisión británica allá por los lejanos 80′.

Echo and the bunnymen: el viaje al pasado
La década comenzaba, era 1983 apenas, era su tercer disco en su accidentada carrera, se titulaba «Porcupine» , pero Ian MacCulloch ya cantaba como si el tiempo pudiera detenerse entre el rasgeo de una guitarra y la primera estrofa, como si no hubiere nada más que su voz, y la canción resoando por doquier, los Echo and The Bunnymen parecían apostar por tiempo que contenga toda su desesperación.
Los ochenta se fueron hace mucho, pero cada vez que los escuchó experimento la misma sensación, son una voz del pasado, qu
e cantan sobre una época extraña, sobre cosas que ya no podrían ponernos tristes, pero que aún nos hacen preguntarnos si en realidad no somos los mimos.

Por un tiempo, por lo menos en los primeros años de los ochenta, parecían destinados a ser la banda de Liverpool más importante en su género (siempre después de los Beatles por supuesto) sus canciones parecían himnos para ser cantados en los estadios (si piensan en U2 aciertan) sus singles llamaron la atención de mucha gente, y luego, sin previo aviso, el vocalista se cansó de todo y se largó; la banda nunca pudo ser la misma y desapareció, o eso parecía.
Nunca dijeron adios, asi que cuando volvieron tampoco hicieron demasiado alborto. Ya estaba en escena Oasis, coldplay y cientos de bandas brit con las que competir, la década del noventa estuvo llena de regresos tibios, discos que sólo compraron los demasiados fanáticos y la tumultuosa conducta de Ian McCulloch no ayudó mucho tampoco.
Era dificil conectar con una nueva generación, quienes habían crecido con ellos, ya no escuchaban el mismo tipo de música, los Echo parecían condenados a quedar atrás. sin embargo en el 2001, Killing moon fue incluido en la banda sonora de una película deprimente y oscura titulada «Donnie Darko» y que fue aclamada por la crítica.
La película trataba sobre un adolescente autodestructivo y completamente enajenado. La canción calzaba perfecta. El público lo entendió. De pronto muchos se preguntaban quienes eran los Echo and the Bunnymen, ¿tienen algo que ver con el conejo espeluznante que se le aparecía a Donnie en sus alucinaciones? sin duda la película ayudó a conectar la sensibilidad de los Echo con el nuevo siglo. Como la suerte parece no abandonarlos en el 2004 una comedia juvenil titulada «Girl next door» protagonizada por la bellisima Elisha Cuthbert (la misma que interpreró a Kim Bauer en 24) no tuvo mejor idea de incluir en su banda sonora a los Echo and the bunnymen, y nuevamente el single escogido fue «The Killing Moon».

Los Echo estan de vuelta, el año pasado lanzaron un nuevo album, siberia, y después de tantos intentos fállidos podemos decir que estamos ante un gran disco, pero eso lo dejaremos para después, por ahora los dejare con una versión de la canción presentada en vivo allá por el 83′.
